To operate a maritime radio, all mariners, including recreational boaters, will need the certificate. It's the LAW! Be sure that you and your family take the Maritime Radio Course to ensure safe boating when the season begins.

The Maritime Radio Course teaches emergency radio procedures and everyday operating techniques. Learn all about the uses of marine radios, choice of frequencies, operation, phonetic alphabet, procedural words and phrases, as well as Digital Selective Calling and the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (DSC/GMDSS).

This course is now available online through the Canadian Power and Sail Squadron website -, select “Sunshine Coast Power and Sail Squadron – Sechelt” for registration.

Through the web-based Moodle study platform, just follow the sequence of study modules. It includes many video demonstrations on how to use a VHF Marine Radio. It is fun and you will learn fast.

When you are ready for the endorsement examination and oral test, contact our Volunteer Examiner Jim Forward at / 604-741-2253 for arrangements.

The course fee is $100 and includes online eBook, examination, government licensing fee and wallet card.

For ease of reference, a printed book is also available. Members who would like one should let Jim know. The cost is $25 payable to the Sunshine Coast Power and Sail Squadron.
