Introduction to Marine Navigation (B3)
This is an online combination of the B2 and B3 Courses
The Oakville Power and Sail Squadron is offering a combined course in the winter/spring months of 2021 for those seeking to improve their boating and navigational skills and on the water enjoyment.
By combining these two courses discounts are offered over enrolling in each course individually. Although the combined courses can be comfortably completed in the time allotted, due to the Covid-19 pandemic we will allow students up to 2 years to complete both courses.
These courses will be conducted on-line via GoToMeeting, with on-line exams.

This course will help you understand Nautical charts, the symbols and signage and how to use this information when Navigating by observing landmarks and Navigation Aids. You will also be introduced to electronic navigation. You will learn how to tie useful knots, handling a boat under power, basics of weather, anchoring, and a review of collision prevention regulations. This course also has a number of optional topics that will be taught depending on your interests; these include towing, kayaking, canoeing, trailering and a check list for layup and launch.
Boating 3 – Introduction to Marine Navigation offers the student the skills to be able to navigate in coastal regions with the use of the magnetic compass, traditional paper chart navigation and the use of the GPS and chart plotter. The student will practise simple conning and plotting through the use of virtual cruises. Other topics include the Captain’s responsibilities before setting out and when under way, handling a boat under sail and power as well as your environmental responsibilities and electrical hazards. This course also has a number of optional topics that will be taught depending on your interests; these include tides and currents, canals and locks, and collision regulations.
Students will be provided links to topics of interest throughout the course.
The combined courses will be conducted over 14 weeks on Wednesday evenings from 6:30pm until 9:30pm, from January 13, 2021 with the open-book exam on April 21, 2021. Instructors will be available from 6:30pm until 7pm, to answer questions and help with homework.

You’re on the water and in trouble! Who do you call? How do you call? When do you call?
Do you really know, what you do not know?
Maritime radio is a great way to connect to information and assistance from your location on the water. Anyone on board using the radio must have a Restricted Operator’s Certificate (Maritime) (ROC(M)), so this course could be a family affair! In addition to emergency radio procedures you’ll discover the advantages of everyday operating techniques; the many uses of maritime radios, operation, phonetic alphabet, procedural words and phrases as well as Digital Selective calling and the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (DSC/GMDSS).
This course is two evenings from 7:00 pm until 10:00 pm. Course takes place on line for the lectures. Exam times and locations will be determined closer to the commencement of the courses.
Watch for future courses this upcoming season in October and December 2021 and in February and April 2022. The courses may be limited in size so that we can be assured of a quality experience for you.
