For your convenience, you can write the Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC) Test Online or in a Classroom.
All Boating Safety (PCOC) tests and test questions are controlled and provided by Transport Canada. The Online and Classroom paper tests are 50 questions long. The passing mark is 75%.
Online
As regulated by Transport Canada, to qualify to write the online Boating Safety Test on Transport Canada's test platform, the candidate must complete an online Boating Safety course, such as the CPS Boating Basics Online safety course*, from a Transport Canada qualified course provider. The online courses must meet the following minimum requirements:
- A minimum of 3 hours to complete.
- A minimum of 5 lessons
- To proceed to the next lesson you must complete each final lesson quiz with a minimum 80% mark
- Failing the lesson quiz requires retaking the full lesson.
- No candidate can proceed to the online Transport Canada Boating Safety Test without having first completed the above minimum requirements.
Once the candidate has completed the online course, 2 attempts can be made to complete the open book online Boating Safety test but they must be taken no less than 24 hours apart. Failure of the second test requires that the candidate takes the full online course again or registers for a classroom course.
In a Classroom
Canadian Power and Sail Squadrons has been teaching boaters in the classroom since 1938; it is still one of the best learning methods.
The in-class Boating Safety test is a closed book exam. It is strongly recommended that you take the CPS-ECP Boating Basics safety course* before you attempt to write the exam.
If you intend to boat on ocean coasts or large lakes and rivers, we recommend that you also take Boating Essentials, which covers navigation and the proper use of charts to navigate.
When you receive the Boating Safety test questionnaire, first verify the expiry date at the bottom of the cover. Do not write a test that is expired.
