Boating 5 – Near Shore Marine Navigation Level 2 - Classroom

Suggested Prerequisite Boating 4 – Near Shore Marine Navigation Level 1

Details Students will meet in a classroom 1 evening per week for the duration of the course. Course length varies depending on the course from 5 evenings to 12 evenings. Printed or Ebook course material will be distributed to the students either on the first night or prior to the start of the course.

Knowledge of the basics of navigation and planning cruises on a maritime chart is just the start.  Expand that knowledge by using a variety of electronic devices to chart your course and enable you to plan your course under tidal, current and windy conditions.  By learning more about dead reckoning, fixes and running fixes you will have attained a high degree of proficiency in navigating through coastal waters.  In the CPS-ECP AP Course we cover GPS, Chart Plotters, Radar, SONAR, Autopilots and more. This course was formerly called Advanced Piloting. Note: For optimal ePub readability we recommend PC and Android users download the free ePub reader application called Calibre. For Apple and Mac users we recommend using the free Books app the comes standard on Mac OS.

Additional Information

This class will be held in a virtual classroom using MS Teams. The start date is tentative as we wll be coordinating with a number of squadrons in the Niagara District and urrounding area. This course will run from 7-9 pm for a minimum of 12 weeks on Thursday evenings Some flexibility will be required in order to accommodate the instructors schedule and may extend into early January. Some face to face classroom sessions may be arranged as necessary in order to review the plotting exercises

Successful passing of the exam for this course allows you to append the "AP" designation for Advanced Pilot after your name. This course will be presented on line with our Instructor Marc Drouin. The first part of the exam is a take home. The second part may be done on line or in person depending on Covid Protocols. Boating 5 is an interesting and enjoyable introduction to the latest techniques in coastal navigation. The course will be delivered via Teams for approximately 10 weeks although this time may be extended if students prefer. If safety and regulations permit, there may be an opportunity for face to face tutorial sessions. Completion of Boating 4 is a highly recommended prerequisite.
