Junior Navigation - 1st in the Offshore Navigation Series
Junior Navigation and (later) Navigation have been re-introduced as a two course (developed by our USPS partners) equivalent to Celestial Navigation . The first offering, JN, is a gentle introduction to use of the sextant to obtain sun sights to augment and validate electronic positions, and to extend the use of conventional navigation techniques as learned in Advanced Piloting. The course material includes: concepts of celestial navigation; use of the mariner’s sextant to take sights of the sun; the why and how of accurate time determination; how to use the Nautical Almanac; sight reduction to determine lines of position (LOPs); special plotting sheets, charts, and other navigational data for passage planning and offshore positioning.
Today’s recreational boater uses electronics as the primary means of positioning, and employs celestial positioning techniques as a check that the GPS is working correctly, and as backup in the event that electronics fail. In the offshore environment, accurate determination of position is just as important as when one is navigating in coastal waters. While offshore, visible terrestrial landmarks are no longer available to the navigator as reference points. In the Junior Navigation course, the student will learn to substitute celestial objects such as the sun as reference points. .
Successful completion of the Advanced Piloting Course is a suggested prerequisite.
The Navigating with GPS course would also be an asset.

After Junior Navigation, this course is the second part of the study of offshore navigation, further developing the student's understanding of celestial navigation theory. This Navigation course deals with learning celestial positioning using other bodies, in addition to positioning using the sun (covered in the Junior Navigation course). This course also deals with electronic software tools that can be used to plan and execute an offshore voyage. You will first learn to reduce these sights by the Law of Cosines method. Later in the course, you will learn an additional method of sight reduction, the Nautical Almanac Sight Reduction (NASR) method. You will also learn about sight planning techniques. With that knowledge, you will have the tools to take sights and complete your Navigation Sight Folder. The course includes a chapter on using a software-based voyage planning tool and a navigation program. The final chapter of the course contains a Practice Cruise that ties the separate elements of the course together.
Successful completion of the Junior Navigation Course is a suggested prerequisite.
The Navigating with GPS course would also be an asset.

With the new DSC format up and operational for the Great Lakes area as of September of 2007, it is time for you to upgrade your present VHF certificate, to include the new DSC portion of the mandatory certification, to allow you the benefits of this new technology. Just imagine, sending a pre-determined, fixed, call for assistance, at the push of a button and allowing you the freedom to deal with the emergency at hand. You may choose to take the whole course again (beginning Tuesday October 6th), as a refresher, or choose only to upgrade your current certification to include the DSC portion only (you then would not be required to attend all 4 sessions).
