Winter Seminars The Celestial Navigation seminar was a great success. Kevin jones delivered a compact but comphrensive overview of how to navigate by the heavenly bodies.The next seminar ison crusing prepration and is described below.
The response
to Canadian Power & Sail's monthly seminars has been overwhelming, and we're
pleased to announce the next in our series.
Boaters who
plan to sail beyond Kelly's Island for more than a weekend will collect a
wealth of knowledge at this presentation. Not sure if you're ready to cruise
outside the bay? Come along anyway, and bring your skipper/mate.
This seminar
will give you information that will help you decide.

CPS SAIL COURSE - FIRST TIME OFFERED IN NEWFOUNDLAND Avalon Squadron is offering a new classroom Sail course which provides the knowledge required to operate a sailboat safely and efficiently. It will acquaint the beginner with day-sailing and sharpen the skills of more experienced sailors. Emphasis is placed on how a sailboat works and the special terminology associated with sailboats, sailing, and practical seamanship. The particular problems of piloting under sail and making progress to windward will be covered. Classes will take place every Monday evening, beginning October 3, 2011 , and will continue for 8 weeks. An exam will be written at the end of the course. Space is limited to 12 students.
Deadline for registration is MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, 2011 . Cost is $100 for CPS members and $130 for non-members. This is an introductory price for this year only. SEMINAR SERIES
Canadian Power & Sail (Avalon Squadron) is offering a series of monthly seminars dedicated to topics of interest to recreational boaters. They will take place on the fourth Wednesday of each month (excluding December). We are pleased to present our first seminar: TOPICS: (1) Winterizing your Boat; and (2) Diesel Engines and How they Work DATE: Wednesday, September 28, 2011 @ 7:00 p.m.PLACE: Canadian Coast Guard Building, Southside RoadCOST: Free for CPS members; $5 for non-members Space is limited.

Avalon Squadron and Rovers Search and Rescue
are presenting
A Marine Distress Flare Demonstration
at Foxtrap Marina on Sunday May 29th at 2:00 p.m.
The Rovers Search and Rescue will take the lead with instructing how to fire off flares.
If you have outdated flares bring them along, you may get the opportunity to use them.
This event will take place wearher permitting.

Rob Dunphy (far left, back row), Senior Environment Advisor of Hibernia Management-ExxonMobil, and recent graduate of the CPS Seamanship course, took his newly-acquired boating skills to his workplace and spent lunch hours training co-workers for the Pleasure Craft Operator Card. Along with Rob, several successful candidates and Avalon Squadron Training Officer, Debbie Churchill, can be seen in this photo, which was taken immediately after the exam was written. Many thanks to Rob for a job well done.
Avalon Squadron's 20th Anniversary
