Welcome to the Markham Power & Sail Squadron
Learning here gives you a lifetime of fun and safe boating

The Markham Power and Sail Squadron is a group of boaters from the Town of Markham in York Region and from the community of Agincourt in the north-east end of Toronto.

We offer presentations of the courses of the Canadian Power and Sail Squadrons and have a social program for members to meet and greet.

On Saturday, February 27, 2010, The Markham and York Squadrons will gather on Lake Simcoe to catch vast numbers of fish and determine who has the best recipe for chili. All members of a Canadian Power and Sail Squadron are invited. Can we tempt you to join us this year? For further information, phone Mark Orge at (905) 471-4166.

IN MEMORIAM – IVAN CECIL AMERY AP

Long-standing member Ivan Amery passed away unexpectedly on December 5, 2009 at Markham-Stouffville Hospital, in his 74th year. Ivan and Bette, his wife of 47 years, were among the original 17 founding members of Markham Squadron in 1976. At the time of his death, Ivan was the Squadron’s sole remaining active Charter Member. He is survived by Bette, his brother Tony, son Kevin, daughter Elizabeth (James Luhta) and two grandchildren, Kristy and Jack.

Keen sailors, both Ivan and Bette crewed for many years on large sailboats in Lake Ontario. From the moment he joined CPS, Ivan was an enthusiastic participant in ongoing CPS courses that would benefit sailors, including Seamanship Sail, Advanced Piloting, Weather and Marine Maintenance; and also completed Instructor Training and Squadron Management. He very soon became an enthusiastic volunteer as well.

An electrical engineer with IBM by profession, Ivan had actually at one time considered a career in meteorology, and had taken several courses in that field. He drew on this background to become the Weather Course instructor for Markham Squadron, giving an enriched presentation that exceeded the course requirements. Ivan also acted as the Weather Exam marker for the CPS national office on a long-term basis. In 1998 he was awarded a Life Membership in CPS for his contributions over the previous 20 years. Ivan continued on as a volunteer, teaching Weather at the squadron level for the next several years.

He will be sadly missed by his many friends in CPS.
